Man who killed a California cop arrested by the police

Sheetal Sukhija - Sunday 11th March, 2018

CALIFORNIA, U.S. - A man who is suspected of having killed a police officer and injuring another one in Pomona, California was arrested by the police on Saturday.

The police officer who was killed was identified by the police Chief Michael Olivieri as a 30-year-old officer, Greggory Casillas, who was believed to be a rookie still in field training.

Olivieri has said, "Gregg is a hero, a man to be looked up to. He left his family at home to protect yours and his ultimate sacrifice will never be forgotten."

The suspect is said to have barricaded himself in an apartment for more than 15 hours - after which authorities made the arrest.

Capt. Christopher Bergner of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said at a news conference that the incident began on Friday night after the suspect evaded police in a pickup, crashed and fled.

He said, “The suspect ran into an apartment complex and the officers gave chase. As he barricaded himself in a bedroom, officers attempted to contact him. He then began firing through the door, striking the two officers."

So far, the suspect has not been named by authorities.

According to Olivieri, Casillas leaves behind a wife and two children.

They revealed that he joined the department in 2014 and worked at several jobs before becoming an officer.

According to Bergner, "The other officer is in serious condition and is undergoing surgery. We expect him to be fine.”

Meanwhile, Los Angeles County Sheriff Jim McDonnell said the wounded officer was trying to help Casillas when he was shot in the face.

The sheriff added that other officers at the scene pulled them out of the line of fire.
