Apple enters new deal with Steven Spielberg on its platform

CALIFORNIA, U.S. - As part of its efforts to make it big in the scripted program segment of the business, and compete with the likes of Netflix and Amazon - Apple is said to have struck a new content deal with Mr. Movie Magic, Steven Spielberg.

As part of the deal, Apple will feature content from Steven Spielberg’s production company Amblin Television, along with NBCUniversal.

The plan, Amazing Stories, will see production of new episodes of the classic 1980s sci-fi, fantasy and horror anthology.

The original series, which only ran for two seasons in the mid-80s, received a fair amount of critical acclaim, including a dozen Emmy nominations.

According to reports, Spielberg will serve as the executive producer and the reboot is set to bring 10 episodes to Apple’s platform.

A report in the Wall Street Journal estimated that each show will cost around $5 million per episode to produce.

The report also pointed out that the figure is roughly in line with what Netflix is budgeting for many of its own programs.

Jennifer Salke, president of NBC Entertainment reportedly said in a statement, "It's wonderful to be reunited with our colleagues Zack [Van Amburg] and Jamie [Erlicht] in their new capacity at Apple. We love being at the forefront of Apple's investment in scripted programming, and can't think of a better property than Spielberg's beloved 'Amazing Stories' franchise with the genius of Bryan Fuller at the helm and more exciting creative partnerships to come."
